WATCH: Laois primary school go virtual for annual Christmas Concert

Everything seems to have gone ‘virtual’ these days and it was no different in Timahoe recently as the boys and girls of Scoil Mhuire Fatima treated their families and friends to a wonderful Carol Service at St Michael’s Church.

There was no audience present due to Covid-19 but the service was streamed live from the church to the homes of the delighted school community.

The service included live performances from 6th Class and pre-recorded performances from all of the other classes.

Local musician Damian Bowe was MC for the night and also teamed up with 6th class for a number of songs including ‘Holy Night’ and the Christmas hit song ‘This Christmas’ by Picture this.

A huge amount of the preparation was undertaken in school ahead of the pre-recorded carols which were recorded last Friday.

All children in the school featured, showing off their considerable musical talents under the expert tutelage of Anna Bergin.

The children from the Naíscoil and the Junior Infants provided major ‘cute factor’ as they always do.

There was an appearance from Santa Claus at one point and even Fr Gerard Breen got into the Christmas spirit by donning his sparkling Christmas jumper and hat whilst recording a lovely message for the children.

Throughout the production of the service, Covid-19 protocols were followed to the letter of the law following a thorough risk assessment.

Face masks were worn by all children and social distancing was maintained at all times.

It was a significant achievement to run a such an event in Covid times and Principal Ann Bergin was delighted with the outcome.

She said: “This Carol Service had been in my mind since September but I wondered if it was too big of an ask in these times.

“But as the saying goes – nothing ventured, nothing gained. It has been a very difficult year for everyone and I really wanted to mark Christmas with an uplifting experience.

“I’m delighted that we have managed to do that and I am so thankful to a number of people for making it happen.

“Firstly, Fr. Gerard Breen who has been so supportive since the idea was first mooted.

“To Ms Moore and Anna Bergin for the brilliant work they have done with 6th Class. Thanks to Andy and Marie Goretti, Karen Fitzpatrick and to Sean and Diarmuid Faherty for preparing the church and the sound.

“We are very thankful to Damian Bowe who has been fantastic for us with lighting, performing and of course taking on the role of MC.

“To Ross Molloy and his mother Liz for organising the recording and streaming of the service.

“What a bonus to the Parish to have this young man willing to share his talent and time to keep us all connected in these unprecedented times.

“Finally, to the children and their parents for their enthusiasm and endeavour.”

It is sure to put you in the mood for Christmas.
