Coronavirus: 48 further deaths and 1,254 new cases – 18 in Laois – as AstraZeneca vaccine approved

There have been a further 48 Coronavirus-related deaths and 1,254 new cases according to figures released this evening by the health authorities.

45 of these deaths occurred in January. The median age of those who died is 82 years and the age range is 30-99 years.

Of today’s new cases, 18 of them are in Laois, meaning the county’s 14-day incidence rate drops from 504.2 to 465.2.

There are now 394 confirmed active cases in the county, compared to 427 yesterday.

Of the cases notified today:

  • 587 are men / 658 are women
  • 54% are under 45 years of age
  • The median age is 42 years old
  • 437 in Dublin, 146 in Cork, 76 in Meath, 69 in Wexford, 62 in Kildare and the remaining 464 cases are spread across all other counties

As of 2pm today, 1,518 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 211 are in ICU. 51 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

EMA recommends approval of AstraZeneca vaccine

Europe’s medicines regulator has recommended approving the AstraZeneca / Oxford University Covid-19 vaccine for people over the age of 18.

It is the third vaccine to be cleared for use in the European Union.

The AstraZeneca vaccine is supplied at a very low cost, is easily transportable and can be stored at fridge temperature. It can be administered by GPs, pharmacists and dentists.
