Motorists asked to avoid area as train ‘broken down’ in Portlaoise

Motorists are being asked to avoid the Fr Browne area of Portlaoise after a train broke down on the level crossing.

Gardai are at the scene just up from Telfords and diversions are in place.

They say: “Train ‘broken down’ at Fr Browne Road level crossing in Portlaoise.

“Diversions are in place, traffic is asked to avoid the area.”

Meanwhile, Gardai have teamed up with a range of other bodies to issue a warning in relation to pedestrians.

They say they have noticed an increase in the amount of people walking on rural roads.

They have issued a warning to motorists and also some tips for pedestrians on how they can be more visible.

They say: “Community groups, Sports clubs, Irish Farm Association and Local Authorities in Laois and Offaly along with An Garda Síochána would like to remind motorists that there is an increased amount of pedestrians nowadays as many work from home and go for walks within their 5K limit often on country roads with poor visibility.

“We would all ask walkers to always wear Hi Viz clothing at all times of the day.

“Avoid wearing headphones while walking on roadways.

“Road Safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
