Know Your Sport – Laois basketball club launch quiz fundraiser to test your sporting knowledge

A Laois basketball club have launched a quiz fundraiser aimed at testing your sporting knowledge.

Portlaoise Panthers Basketball Club have introduced ‘Know Your Sport’ – a game where your ability to predict the outcome of a range of different sporting events will pay dividends.

The club have been hit hard by COVID, causing their season to be abandoned affecting all fundraising and sponsorship.

Panthers Chairperson Shay Dooley said: “With the ongoing safety concerns for both members and the local community we had to pause our club lotto which was one of our main fundraisers, so we have introduced a new ‘Know Your Sport’ sports prediction game all done online.

“Many of us will remember the late and great Jimmy Magee whose incredible knowledge of all sports had us glued to our TVs watching the show of this same name along with George Hamilton back in the 80s/90s.

‘Know Your Sport’ is simple, just predict the winners from a list of fixtures set every week by our Quizmaster and Head Coach Peter O’Sullivan and contribute €5.

“Half the total pot will be divided between the top 3 scoring players as follows; 1st 25%, 2nd 12.5%, 3rd 12.5%, 50% PPBC.

“There will be a guaranteed minimum of €100 for 1st, with €25 for 2nd and 3rd to allow the fundraiser to gain momentum.

‘Know Your Sport’ is something of a win-win fundraiser as each entry gets us closer to that dream of our own home and you get a chance to be our ‘Know Your Sport’ Weekly Champion.”

Questions will come from a range of sports including soccer, boxing, NBA basketball, Formula 1, horse racing, GAA,
rugby and darts.

Shay Dooley said: “While the Panthers dream of a modern accessible Basketball facility in the town is not concrete yet after months of zoom meetings with our county councillors, TDs and participating in consultancies and talks with other clubs, the Panthers are committed to making this dream a reality one way or other.

“All proceeds from ‘Know Your Sport’ will go towards this new facility so please sign up on our website.”
