Dates and venues confirmed for Laois’s Leinster senior and underage championship games

Late June and early July is going to be a very busy time for Laois GAA’s county teams in championship action.

The Leinster GAA fixtures were confirmed last week for the Laois senior and underage teams which will see the Laois senior hurlers kickstart the championship season with their provincial quarter-final against Wexford in Nowlan Park on Saturday, June 26.

In total there will be five games in eight days from that Saturday.

On that same day the Laois minor footballers under Mark Bates will play Wexford in O’Moore Park.

On the following Tuesday, June 29, the Laois U-20 hurlers, who are now being managed by Clough-Ballacolla’s Ollie Hally, will play Westmeath in O’Moore Park.

Two nights later, on July 1, Eddie Kinsella’s U-20 footballers will make the trip to Aughrim to play Wicklow. Laois have been in the last two Leinster U-20 finals though Wicklow will provide a tough championship opener as this team at minor level knocked out Dublin and were beaten in the semi-final after a replay by Kildare.

The minor hurlers will meet the winners of Carlow and Kildare on Wednesday, July 7. All underage competitions are operating in a straight knockout format.

The senior footballers will play Westmeath in Tullamore on Sunday, July 4, in what is pencilled in as a double header with the Meath v Carlow or Longford quarter-final.

If they win that they will be in semi-final action on Sunday, July 18.

Interestingly, for the first time since 2005, Dublin will play at home venue of a Leinster opponent when they travel to Wexford or Wicklow on July 4.

Dublin went from 2006 to 2015 without playing outside of Croke Park with their 2016 clash against Laois played in Kilkenny. All of their opening round games in the years since have been played in O’Moore Park – against Wicklow, Carlow, Louth and Westmeath.
