Tinahely (Wicklow) 4-14 St Conleth’s 1-5
Leinster Club Ladies SFC Round 1

St Conleth’s Leinster club campaign failed to get off the ground in Portarlington this afternoon as they were well beaten by Wicklow champions Tinahely.

Despite a fast start from the newly-crowned Laois champions, that saw them race into a 1-2 to no score lead early on, Tinahely were very impressive and with 3-8 from Laura Hogan they eased into the next round thanks to a big win.

St Conleth’s got a goal after less than a minute when Alanna Havill hit the back of the net and with Aoife Kirrane adding a point from play and Sarah Walsh kicking a free, they couldn’t have asked for a better start.

But the away side soon found their rhythm and 1-4 in quick succession, including 1-2 from Hogan, had them 1-4 to 1-3 up at the first water break, St Conleth’s responding with a point from play from Havill.

Ciara Byrne and Hogan would add further points in the second quarter and despite playing against the breeze, Tinahely were 1-6 to 1-3 ahead at half time.

Niamh Cullen, introduced as a sub at half time, pulled back a point within seconds of the restart but it was to be a false dawn for St Conleth’s as Tinahely 2-5 on the trot, both goals coming from Hogan to stretch their lead into double figures.

Marie Byrne did get a point for St Conleth’s before the water break but that was to be St Conleth’s last score of the day as Tinahely added on another 1-4 in the final quarter to eventually win by 18 points.
