The week that was: Looking back at our most viewed stories of the past seven days

1 – Gardai continuing to investigate after menacing and threatening letter sent to Laois GAA player

Gardai have launched an investigation after a menacing and threatening letter was sent to a Laois GAA player.

The letter was received by a Borris-Kilcotton player following a Senior hurling championship game against Rathdowney-Errill last month.

The letter, which was widely circulated on social media, was written on a mass card.

2 – Back to business as new principal and vice-principal welcome students to Laois secondary school

The new senior management team of a Laois secondary school officially opened their doors for the academic term this week.

Principal, Dympna Kelly and Deputy Principal Claire Fitzgerald, of Dunamase College had a busy morning as they welcomed students and staff back for the first day of term.

Dympna Kelly has recently been appointed to the Principal position.

3 – Two youths arrested after teenager left in hospital following assault in Laois town

A Laois teenager was left in hospital following an assault that occurred in Mountmellick recently.

Gardai were called to the Church Street area of the town at 9.50pm last Thursday – August 18.

They discovered an injured teenager and he was subsequently transferred to Tullamore Hospital.

4 – Draw made for Laois Senior Football Championship quarter finals as other competitions confirmed

The draw has been made for the quarter finals of the Laois Senior football championship.

These games will take place on the weekend of September 10-11 and some interesting ties have been thrown up.

Champions Portarlington face Ballyroan-Abbey while runners-up Portlaoise face Clonaslee St Manman’s. Graiguecullen will take on Courtwood while St Joseph’s take on O’Dempsey’s.

5 – Kind-hearted Laois farmers join ‘Fight for Johnny’s Girls’ by raffling off Belgian Blue

A group of kind-hearted Laois farmers are joining the ‘Fight for Johnny’s Girls’ by raffling off a Belgian Blue heifer called Peppa.

The fundraiser is in aid of Jonathan McCowen – a Portarlington dad with an aggressive form of Motor Neuron disease.

Mr McCowen’s story was made known at the start of July and so far – more than $500,000 has been raised.

6 – Lee the hero as Clonaslee-St Manman’s strike with 20 seconds to go to reach first ever Senior quarter final

Cathal Lee was Clonaslee-St Manman’s hero as he struck for a goal with 20 seconds to play to put his side through to their first ever senior football championship quarter final.

It looked over deep in injury time with Stradbally two points up but Clonaslee never gave up and were rewarded right at the death as the teenager volleyed in from close range.

7 – Plenty of Laois involvement as New South Wales GAA finals take place in Sydney

There was considerable Laois involvement in the New South Wales GAA finals played in Sydney in Australia over the weekend.

Across men’s and ladies football, hurling and camogie, Laois players were among the winners.

Portarlington’s Sean Byrne was voted man of the match in the senior men’s final for Clan na Gael where he had a number of Laois players as club colleagues, including Stephen Attride, his former county team-mate.

9 – Laois woman takes up position as Secretary General of Irish Pharmacy Union

A Laois woman has taken up the position of Secretary General of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU).

Sharon Foley, from Ballylinan, whose appointment was announced in May, had previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Hospice Foundation since 2011.

10 – Two girls with strong Laois contacts appear at Rose of Tralee

After a three-year gap the Rose of Tralee returned to our screens this week, with Westmeath girl Rachel Duffy crowned the overall winner.

While there was no Laois Rose in this year’s contest, two girls with very strong Laois connections appeared on stage in the Dome.

Claire Connolly from Dalkey was the Dublin Rose, and her mother Olive (nee Keegan) was originally from Morette, near Emo.

And the Philadelphia Rose Tara Ryan has strong links to Portarlington, where her dad Thomas is from.
