Sadness as retired Garda who was a decorated Laois footballer passes away

Leo Brennan RIP

There is deep sadness in Laois today following the passing of a retired Garda who was also a talented footballer.

Leo Brennan, originally from Wolfhill but living in 17 Yellowmeadows Park, Clondalkin, Dublin, died peacefully on Wednesday September 14.

Leo was a member of the famed Brennan family from St Joseph’s who were part of the club at one of their best times.

Leo, along with his brothers Kieran and Dessie, played for club and county throughout the 1960s, 1970s and into the 1980s.

Mr Brennan represented his county on 26 occasions from 1967 to 1978.

St Joseph’s won their first Senior title in 1973 with Leo and his brothers members of the teams that repeated the trick in 1975, 1977 and 1978.

Leo is one of a family of 14 from The Swan, 8 boys and 6 girls. Four of the brothers went on to join the Gardai – Kieran, Derek, Dessie and Leo himself.

Leo passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family under the kind care of the wonderful staff at Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife Ann Marie (nee Brennan), parents Gerald and Kathleen, sisters Josie and Margaret and brother Gerry (recently deceased in England).

Leo will be sadly missed by his loving sons Aidan and Gearóid, his brothers Cyril, Eddie, Paddy, Kieran, Dessie and Derek, his sisters Anne, Rose, Celia and Pauline, his grandchildren Conlan, Anne-Marie, Evan and Odhran, daughters-in-law Laura and Ciara, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends.

Leo will be reposing at his residence on Friday September 16, from 4pm to 8pm.
