Gardai launch investigation following incident of attempted robbery and assault in Laois

Gardai in Portlaoise are appealing for information after an incident of attempted robbery and assault took place.

The incident happened on Thursday night and occurred on the Mountmellick Road.

Gardai say their investigation centres around two men who were sighted at the entrance to Portlaoise train station between 5.30pm and 6pm.

One of these men was cycling a dark coloured mountain bike.

A spokesperson said: “Portlaoise Gardaí are investigating an Attempted Robbery and Assault in Portlaoise yesterday evening Thursday night on the Mountmellick Rd, Portlaoise.

“Gardai are particularly interested in any sightings of two males in the area around the entrance to Portlaoise train station on the Mountmellick rd between 5.30 and 6pm, one of the males cycling a dark coloured mountain bike.

“If anyone saw anything suspicious or have dashcam footage please contact the Detective branch at Portlaoise on 057 867 4134.”

Separately, Gardai made two arrests in checkpoints on Thursday evening.

Drugs valued at €6,200 and cash valued at €1,645 was recovered.

Gardai said: “Gardai conducted a checkpoints on Thursday night.

“Suspected drugs to the value of €6,200 and cash €1,645 seized. Two people arrested.”
