In Pictures: Kind-hearted Laois locals come together to free a swan tangled in fishing wire

A group of Laois people came together last week to free a swan that had become distressed in a lake.

The incident occurred on Thursday last week at the lake beside The Heath Golf Club.

The lake is home to several swans and one of them was swimming in some discomfort.

Closer inspection showed that the swan appeared to have become tangled in some fishing wire and weeds.

The locals contacted a group that specializes in wildlife and a plan was concocted in a bid to help the animal.

An extendable crane was located and one man went out into the lake where they retrieved the swan.

The swan was brought back onto dry land where the fishing wire was carefully cut from its legs.

The bird was then returned to the lake where it swam happily away – now freed from the wire.
