Works called for on bridge in Barrowhouse, safety barriers in Ballylinan and grass verge in Ballyadams

Laois County Council General

Fianna Fail Councillor Padraig Fleming has called on Laois County Council to rebuild a bridge wall in Barrowhouse.

According to Councillor Fleming, this bridge, located at Kilmoroney in Barrowhouse, is a fine structure but ‘most of it has gone into the river’.

He also called on the Council to make the bridge wall on the opposite side visible by removing overgrown scrub and weeds.

In response, Senior engineer Philip McVeigh confirmed that the work would be carried out.

He said that the council had inspected it and agreed with Cllr Fleming regarding what was required.

In a second motion at the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District, Cllr Fleming asked for safety barriers in Ballylinan to be replaced.

These are located at pedestrian crossings on Main Street in Ballylinan and at the playground.

Engineer McVeigh told Cllr Fleming that the Council would seek quotes for the cost of this work and then repair the barriers.

While Cllr Fleming’s third motion related to a grass verge at Loughglass T Junction in Ballyadams.

He asked that this be replaced with a hard-core surface as three difference buses collect students from here each morning and then drop them back in the evening.

Cllr Fleming said: “The way it is now, you have half a view of the road and the rest is obscured by the verge.

“Tar or tarmacadam would do the job in the interest of health and safety.”

Engineer McVeigh said that he would meet Cllr Fleming at the location to examine the scale of the works that are required.
