1 – Star of The Chase, Anne Hegerty discusses her family connections right here in Laois

Known as ‘The Governess’ on the popular TV quiz show, The Chase, Anne Hegerty has become a household name across Ireland and the UK.

Speaking on Midlands 103 this week, Anne revealed the extent of her family connections which lie here, in Laois.

2 – Lewis Capaldi replacement announced as Electric Picnic add more acts ahead of festival

Paolo Nutini has been named as the replacement for Lewis Capaldi at this year’s staging of the Electric Picnic.

The Scottish signer announced he was taking a break to deal with an ongoing medical issue.

3 – Donegal native appointed as new Deputy Principal at Laois secondary school

As we previously reported, Portlaoise Institute’s growth has seen Keith McClearn take the Principalship, which has created an opportunity to fill his position as the third Deputy Principal.

Donegal native, Patrick Travers, joins the school’s Senior Leadership Team of Noel Daly (Principal), Patricia Cullen (Deputy Principal) and Mary Marum (Deputy Principal).

4 – Portlaoise off to winning start in intermediate while Castletown refuse to play in Spink

Last year’s Junior ‘A’ champions Portlaoise made a winning return to the intermediate grade this evening when they had four points to spare over O’Dempsey’s in Courtwood.

Meanwhile, the opening round Laois JFC ‘A’ game between Spink and Castletown in Spink didn’t go ahead after Castletown opted not to proceed with the fixture.

5 – In Pictures: Camross, Stradbally, Vicarstown and Timahoe impress Pride of Place judges

Laois showcased its community champions superbly on Wednesday and Thursday, July 19 and 20.

The villages of Camross, Stradbally, Vicarstown and Timahoe greeted Mr Edward Sheehy and Mr Declan Nelson – the judges in the All Island Pride of Place Competition 2023.

6 – 11 clubs represented on our first Laois senior football Team of the Week

After the Laois senior football championship got underway last week, our first football Team of the Week for 2023 is here.

It was a very entertaining start to the championship with the majority of games close in nature.

7 – A busy first day for Laois County Council’s new Cathaoirleach

The new Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council took his chair for the very first time at this week’s meeting of the councillors.

An Cathaoirleach, Pashal McEvoy’s first act was to declare a 15-mimute adjournment to proceedings as a mark of respect for their fallen colleague, the late John Moran.

8 – In Pictures: More than 200 images from the opening round of the club football championships

The 2023 Senior and Intermediate football championships got underway at venues across the county last week.

Six of the eight senior games were played in O’Moore Park with one in Stradbally and one in Ratheniska.

9 – Rosenallis Festival of the Mountain returns with a fresh outlook and vintage twist

After a five-year hiatus, the much-cherished Rosenallis Festival of the Mountain is set to make a comeback.

The festival, which has been a staple in the community since 1962, holds a special place in the hearts of locals.

10 – Munnelly on form as Arles-Kilcruise fire past Mountmellick challenge in IFC

Arles-Kilcruise progressed to the winners section of the Intermediate Football Championship following an impressive win over Mountmellick this evening.

Many had fancied Mountmellick to progress to the next round after an excellent league campaign which saw them claim Division 3 glory. However, they were unable to match this anticipation from the start.
