Planning permission granted for nursing home on the Laois/Kildare border

Planning permission has been granted for a new community support project on the Laois/Kildare border.

The project will see the construction of a new building at St Vincents Hospital Athy.

The site on Woodstock Street, Athy was converted last year from the old hospital into a 92-bed nursing home.

But the success of the project has proven the need for an extension.

The construction of a new Community Nursing Unit (CNU) is similar to the project currently underway at the St Vincent’s campus in Mountmellick.

The new unit will increase capacity on the Athy nursing home, a facility which provides comfort to numerous Laois families.

Speaking about the announcement, Patricia Ryan TD, Sinn Fein spokesperson for Older People, said:

“Having this facility will be a fantastic for the people of Athy and surrounding areas.

“The staff in St Vincents hospital do incredible work in looking after our older people.”
