A captain, a try-scoring prop and a senior debut – Laois players involved with Leinster as inter-provincial series get underway across the grades

A Laois teenager will captain the Leinster U-18 club side in their opening Interprovincial game against Munster on Sunday while a number of other local players will also represent their province this weekend.

Darragh Farrell, who plays for Athy, has been named as the out-half on the Leinster U-18 clubs team while Lee Fitzpatrick from Portarlington is with the Leinster U-18 schools team that also play Munster in Fethard on Sunday.

Farrell’s selection is made all the more remarkable by the fact that he will be eligible to play at this grade again next year.

Also a talented Gaelic footballer, Farrell was a star player on the St Joseph’s team that won the Laois minor title last year for the first time since the 1960s.

Fitzpatrick plays his schools rugby with Cistercian Roscrea and is a highly-rated prop, scoring two first-half tries in the win over Ulster during the week.

At U-18 level, there is both a schools and clubs Leinster team before they filter in to one team at U-19.

Meanwhile, there will be two Laois girls on the Leinster ladies team that play Ulster on Saturday in Donnybrook.

Leah Tarpey from Kilcavan will make her Leinster debut when she lines out at centre while Eimear Corri from Portlaoise is in the second row.

There is also Laois interest in the U-18 ladies game against Ulster in Donnybrook on Saturday where Avril Whittle from Portarlington is named among the replacements.
