Portarlington Rugby Club turns 50 and celebrations are set to begin as new season kicks off this weekend

The return of the domestic rugby season is almost upon us, and with it comes a huge milestone in Laois sport.

The 2023/24 season marks the 50th anniversary of Portarlington Rugby Club.

The club are running a season-long celebration to commemorate the landmark event.

It all kicks off on Sunday, August 27, at 3pm in Lea Road, Portarlington.

Athy will provide the opposition as the two sides get the historic season underway in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Leinster Hosie Cup.

Before the game, there will be fun activities for all the family, starting at 12.30pm withrefreshments and a barbecue.

The official flag raising ceremony and photograph will take place at 1pm, so the club is encouraging attendees to wear Portarlington club colours.

Members of the original 1974 team will be present to mark the occasion.

There will also be bouncy castles, music, and face painting to keep the children entertained.
