A Laois teenager and his family are smiling this week as he recently became a World Champion in Taekwondo.

Shane Allison, who turned 17 in April, was successful at the world event which took place in Finland last week.

Shane took to the mats Wednesday of last week and he had a very tough campaign.

The Laois teenager had to compete against compatriots from England, Finland, Scotland, Argentina and Australia

After triumphing against all of them, he progressed to the final against Romanian David Mario.

Following the win, Shane then took to the podium where he was announced as the 2023 ITF -75kg Sparring World Champion.

It caps a remarkable couple of months for the Laois man who was crowned European champion in Romania in May.

Shane goes to school in St Paul’s Secondary school in Monasterevin where he has just gone into 6th year.

He trains in Nio Taekwondo Newbridge with Mr Hong Looi and Miss Sabina Mason – both of whom travelled out to Finland to support him.

Shane has been doing Taekwondo since he was about 4 and a half.

From the moment he started it he loved it. Shane makes massive sacrifices for his sport.

He trains 5-6 times per week and during the preparation attends National Team Squad sessions which are held in Dublin and Cork.

Well done Shane!
