1 – CONFIRMED: Former boss McNulty returns as Laois confirm manager for 2024 season

Laois GAA have confirmed that Justin McNulty will be in charge of the Laois senior footballers for the 2024 season on a three year term.

News that the Mullaghbawn clubman was returning to Laois surfaced last Friday and the delay to the confirmation was due to his backroom team being finalised.

 

2 – In Pictures: Fr Seán Murphy returns to Rath to celebrate golden jubilee

Fifty years after he was ordained there, Fr Seán Murphy returned to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Rath, on Saturday last to celebrate his golden jubilee.

Surrounded by his parents Michael and Theresa and siblings, Fr Seán was ordained by Most Rev Dr Lennon, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin on April 29, 1973, the first and only to date, ordination in Rath Church.

3 – St Mary’s CBS Portlaoise pays tribute to hugely popular teacher described as a ‘legend’

St Mary’s CBS Portlaoise recently wished an emotional farewell to Mr Seán O’Laoire, a man they described a “legend.”

The school came together last Friday, as a tribute and to celebrate Mr O’Laoire’s last day after 31 years in the school.

4 – Young Laois man killed following ‘hit and run’ incident in Limerick

A young Laois man died following a ‘hit and run’ incident in Limerick last Friday evening.

Joe Drennan, of Knocknagad, Mountrath, was killed following a fatal road collision in Castletroy.

The 21-year-old was a talented journalism student in University of Limerick where he was in Fourth Year.

5 – In Pictures: Wild celebrations as St Joseph’s lift Jack Delaney Cup for first time since 2000

It wasn’t one bit pretty – but nobody in St Joseph’s cares as they claimed their first Laois SFC since 2000 yesterday.

As everyone expected, this was a real chess match where St Joseph’s timed their run to perfection.

They kicked the final two points of the contest to win by 0-7 to 0-6.

6 – In Pictures: Massive contributions made as four Colaiste Íosagáin teachers retire

On Friday last, the large staff of Coláiste ĺosagáin gathered to mark the retirement of four colleagues who have long standing service to the school – Marie Duffy, Gerardine Murphy, Criona Higgins and John Sheedy.

Marie is originally from Galway but lives in Portarlington while Gerardine is a native of Tulla in Clare but lives in Portlaoise.

7 – BREAKING: Department signs new contract to house Ukrainian refugees in Stradbally for 32-week period

The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth have signed a contract to house Ukrainian refugees in Stradbally for a 32 week period.

Starting on November 6, the site of Electric Picnic, Stradbally Hall, which is owned by Thomas Cosby, will come back on stream for Ukrainian refugees.

8 – Winning Minor co-captain Ramsbottom dedicates title win to the late Ronan McNamara

Stradbally Parish Gaels were crowned Laois minor football champions on Sunday, after a phenomenal win over St Joseph’s.

The game took place in O’Moore Park and served as the curtain raiser to the senior final.

9 – ‘They’ve no school, no pubs, all they have is the pitch, and by God, do they use it’ – Paul Lawlor, Annanough manager

There was joyous scenes in O’Moore Park on Friday night as Annanough were crowned Laois Junior ‘A’ football champions.

Damien McCaul and Killian Horgan shone brightest in the final, as their side overcame The Harps by 3-6 to 1-3.
