Laois student receives Naughton Scholarship worth €20,000

A Laois student has been awarded the prestigious Naughton Scholarship – worth €20,000 – to further his studies.

Portlaoise’s Zayed Abdelrazak, a past pupil of Portlaoise College, was presented with the scholarship recently.

After sitting his Leaving Cert in the summer, Zayed is currently studying Engineering in Trinity College Dublin.

The Naughton Scholarships are a scheme of scholarships to promote the study of engineering, science and technology at third level by students in Ireland.

Each year Leaving Certificate students can apply for a scholarship if they intend on studying science, engineering or technology at third level that year.

Organisers are particularly interested in students applying to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related subjects rather then the more practical sciences (Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary, Physiotherapy etc).

In a momentous occasion for both Portlaoise College and the pursuit of excellence in STEM education, Principal Noel Daly extended his congratulations to Zayed Abdelrazak, as he received the prestigious Naughton Scholarship worth €20,000.

As Zayed embarks on his engineering studies at Trinity College Dublin, Mr Daly expressed confidence in his ability to excel and make substantial contributions to the field.

The entire school community extends its warmest congratulations to Zayed Abdelrazak, exemplifying the school’s commitment to nurturing bright minds in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation.

The legacy of Zayed’s achievement will be reflected in the school’s receipt of €1000, which will be used to augment the equipment in the science department with the purchase of a Van de Graaf generator and other science equipment.

Mr Daly, with a palpable sense of pride, said: “Zayed’s remarkable achievement not only reflects his individual dedication and academic ability but also underscores the commitment of Portlaoise College to fostering a culture of excellence in STEM education.”
