Phelan and Cuddy to the fore as Mountrath claim Leinster Junior hurling glory against Enniscorthy

Leinster College’s Junior ‘A1’ Hurling Championship Final

Mountrath Community School have been crowned Leinster Junior A1 hurling champions following victory in Carlow Town hurling club this afternoon.

Coached by Christy Coughlan and Aaron Dunphy, the Laois school defeated St Mary’s CBS of Enniscorthy by five points.

A1 is a level in between A and B so this is a very impressive result for any Laois school.

Captain Conor Mortimer and centre back Tommy Goode were immense all day for their side.

While up front, the Castletown duo of Kyron Cuddy and Tom Og Phelan were excellent and they were driven by Donnchadh Carroll from midfield.

Mountrath settled well as Tom Og Phelan landed a brace of frees and Kyron Cuddy pointed.

Enniscorthy replied with a point but Mountrath’s next score was a goal. Phelan showed quick thinking to take a free quickly and Cuddy smashed the sliotar to the net.

Enniscorthy struck over three more points before half time but so too did Mountrath.

Phelan added two more points while Cuddy took his tally to 1-2 as they led 1-6 to 0-4 at half time.

Fergal Brennan added to the score when play resumed but then Enniscorthy came back into it with three points in a row.

The excellent Donnchadh Carroll settled Mountrath with a long range free and then sub Paddy Farrell made the title safe with a well taken goal.
