1 – Internationally renowned chef set to open restaurant and guesthouse outside Laois town

An internationally renowned chef has announced his intention to open a restaurant and a guesthouse on a site just outside of Abbeyleix.

Cúán Greene, a 31-year-old from Dublin, is set to bring the exciting development to Millbrook House, a late-Victorian house on 4.2 acres.

2 – Laois’s most successful club football manager confirmed to take over Ballyroan-Abbey for 2024 season

Martin Murphy, the former championship-winning manager with Portarlington and Stradbally, will be in charge of the Ballyroan-Abbey footballers in 2024.

His appointment is a significant coup for Ballyroan-Abbey, who endured a disappointing 2023 campaign.

In 2021, Tommy and Natalie Conway (nee McCabe) from Tullamore welcomed their gorgeous baby boy, Joey.

Unfortunately, Joey, who is only two years old, has had a traumatic time in his short life, more than some of us will have in a lifetime.

There is sadness in Laois and Carlow this week following the passing of Very Rev Brendan J Howard PE.

Fr Howard was well known in Laois as before he became a priest, he was the principal of a secondary school.

6 – Helicopter and emergency services called following crash involving car and trailer in Laois

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to a crash which happened on Wednesday, January 10, to come forward to aid their investigation.

The incident happened on the R445 at Ballaghmore and involved a trailer carrying blocks of wood and a vehicle.

7 – Walsh Cup: Laois hurlers open the 2024 season with a sweet victory over Offaly

The Laois hurlers kicked off their 2024 campaign with an impressive victory over old foes Offaly last Thursday.

In tough conditions in the Centre of Excellence, Portlaoise, Laois won out by 2-18 to 0-18 in Round 1 of the Walsh Cup.

8 – Call made for Google Maps to remove road near Rock of Dunamase as locals can’t deal with heavy traffic

A Laois County Councillor this week called on Google Maps to remove a road near the Rock of Dunamase from their system.

Fine Gael Councillor PJ Kelly has asked that Google be contacted and asked to stop sending vehicles from the Ballycarroll Road down to the Rock of Dunamase.

9 – Sadness in Emo at the death of JJ Treacy

There is sadness in Emo, The Heath and the wider communities this week at the death of JJ Treacy, a hugely respected man in the area. He was aged in his early 80s.

A former chairman of Emo GAA and a part of the club’s only championship-winning side in 1972, he was a diehard club member.

10 – Double Laois involvement as New York secured Connacht hurling league glory last weekend

History was made over the weekend as the New York hurlers defeated Mayo to claim the Connacht Hurling League title.

They ran out 2-25 to 2-12 winners in the decider after beating a Galway development side and Leitrim on the way to the final.

And the team was made up of two lads with strong Laois connections.
