2024 marks the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of The Laois Association Dublin.

The Association was founded in 1949 to cater for and provide a welcome to the Laois senior hurling team, who reached that year’s All Ireland Final.

The game didn’t go our way, but the energy from the group left a lasting legacy that still thrives to this day.

The Association held it’s AGM prior to Christmas in a new venue – The Teacher’s Club, Parnell Square – where the committee were reelected for this prestigious year.

The committee will now sit down and plan the year’s events, the centrepiece being a celebration of the 75 years of the Association. Details will follow in due course.

The elected officers of the Association are:

  • President – Sandy Metcalfe,
  • Vice President – Mary Doyle,
  • Chairman – Gerry Thompson,
  • Vice Chairman – Vincent Rafter,
  • Secretary – Eugene Donohue,
  • Treasurers – Margaret Kennedy and Carmel Campion,
  • PRO – Rory Campion,
  • Membership Officer – Mary Doyle,
  • GDPR Officer – Eugene Donohue.

The AGM was followed by a poignant memorial service for deceased members and deceased loved ones of members.

On the day, the Association lovingly remembered Donal Hickey, DickButler, sisters Dolores O’Reilly and Claire King and the legendary Fintan Walsh.

The moving service was conducted by Reverend Nigel Pierpoint and Father James Daly.

The day was rounded off with a beautiful Christmas lunch and entertainment provided by the Association’s own, Sandy Metcalfe and Rathdowney entertainer, Michael Creagh.

Membership is open and new members are always welcome, signified by the Association’s motto: “There is a chance of meeting old friends and a certainty of meeting new friends.”
