History made as Portlaoise College win first ever Junior ‘A’ All-Ireland girls volleyball title

Monday, April 22, will go down in the history books in Portlaoise College.

It is the first time that the school has won a Junior A girls All-Ireland competition.

They have also entered themselves in Volleyball Ireland’s history books by becoming the first ever ETB school to win this competition.

The team travelled down to UL with Presentation Kilkenny yet to be played for the cup.

Portlaoise College began the game very strongly, winning the first set 25-14 with remarkable serving from Freya Stanley.

The Portlaoise attack was also in full flight with setters Zuzanna Sokolowsko and Olivia Reynolds setting perfectly, for Olga Kozakiewicz and Maja Warmuz in particular.

It was no surprise that Presentation Kilkenny were not going to give up without a fight.

The intense second set ended in a nail biting finish. With Portlaoise College coming back from a 24-21 deficit to win the set 28-26, thanks in no small part to Akvile Kazbaraite’s serving and the composed play of MVP Freya Stanley.

A phenomenal performance from the girls and hopefully is the beginning of a very bright future for this bunch of girls.

Team List: Katerina Kolesnikova, Olivia Reynolds, Akvile Kazbaraite, Zuzanna Sokolowska, Maja Warmuz, Olga Kozakiewicz, Aoibhínn Grundy, Freya Stanley (C), Leigh Sheridan
