1 – 30 homes to be constructed at historic Laois site described as an ‘eye-sore’ in ‘total state of dereliction’

A historic site in Laois, labelled an “eye-sore” and in a “total state of dereliction” has been earmarked for a new 30-home development.

The Irishtown Maltings site on the Portlaoise Road in Mountmellick was listed among a range of social housing projects currently being undertaken by Laois County Council.

2 – Crettyard brothers to lead charity walk for homeless charity in memory of late sister

The family and friends of the late Ann Delaney from Crettyard will undertake a sponsored walk on the morning of Saturday, May 25 to raise funds for the Alice Leahy Trust.

Brothers John and Ciaran Delaney will lead the walk along the Carlow leg of the Columbanus Way which is a 40km walk from the top of Mount Leinster to Carlow town, taking in Myshall, Bagenalstown, Leighlinbridge and Milford.

While the festival takes place earlier than ever this year, fans have had to wait longer than ever for an announcement.

There was more festival news this week when when organisers of the 2024 Old Fort Quarter Festival in Portlaoise have confirmed the line up for this year.

The festival takes place from June 27-30 and is set against the historic backdrop of Portlaoise’s Old Fort.

5 – Full list of properties sold in Laois during March, including two sold for over half a million euro

There were 73 residential properties sold in Laois in the second month of the year according to the Property Price Register, a significant decrease on the 2023 figure.

Last March saw 111 homes sold, almost 35% more than this year.

It is the third consecutive monthly decline in Laois property sales, after January and February also saw a drop-off in activity.

Laois U-14 academy squads had a successful day of hurling when they travelled to Cork recently for their first games of the year.

They had a productive day out last Saturday – beating both Cork City and Cork East.

However, despite the great hurling on display it was a trad session breaking out on the bus home that stole the show.
