Gardai make four arrests in Midlands Prison Portlaoise following alleged assault

Gardai confirmed they have made four arrests in the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise following an alleged assault.

The incident, described as an ‘assault causing harm’, occurred on Saturday, December 6 in the Portlaoise facility.

This morning, Gardai from the Serious Crime Unit made four arrests at the prison.

The four men who have been detained are aged in their 20s and 30s.

They are currently being held in a Garda station in the East of the country.

A spokesperson said: “An Garda Síochána are investigating all the circumstances of an Assault Causing Harm, which is alleged to have taken place in the Midlands Prison on the 6th December 2025.

“This morning 12th December 2025, investigating Gardaí from the Serious Crime Unit, Laois/Offaly Garda Division have arrested 4 males (aged in their 20s and 30s) at the Midlands Prison, Portlaoise.

“All four males are being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Garda Stations in the Garda Eastern Region.”
