Pedestrian crossing for Laois town and calls to resurface road near school

A brand new pedestrian crossing is on the way to a Laois town.

Laois County Council, at the request of Independent Cllr James Kelly, will install a pedestrian crossing at the Square in Mountrath.

According to Mr Kelly, this “is a very busy section.

“People sometimes have to nearly make two crossings to get from one side of the square to the other as it currently is.

“So this will certainly come as a huge relief to people in Mountrath.”

Engineer Edmond Kelly said: “As an initial stage, a marked crossing point for pedestrians in Market Square will be installed.

“This will happen this year to improve the accessibility for all users of all ages and abilities.”

Meanwhile, Cllr Kelly also called for resurfacing works from the Rushin Road to Paddock National School to be undertaken ‘as a matter of urgency’.

He said: “These are two long straight roads that are up and down all the way.

“They are badly in need of repair.”

In reply, Engineer Kenny said: “Resurfacing works on the R440 between Mountrath and Paddock is subject to funding becoming available to undertake the works.”
