Noel Garvan: Whatever you do look after that ankle injury

There are many injuries that can cause long term problems but probably one of the most common and the most neglected injuries people get are ankle injuries.

Often after one or two weeks rest people return to action with little or no treatment or rehabilitation done. The short term effects of this is the ankle is left very unstable which leaves you vulnerable to other injuries. On top of that if you injure that same ankle again you are nearly guaranteed to do more damage second time around due to the weakening of the connective tissues around the ankle after the first injury.

The long term effects are many and include reduced range or motion, instability, stress and changes to surrounding and other joints.

Nine times out of ten I can tell within a minute of assessing an ankle if it has been injured before. Depending on how long ago the injury was there would be signs of changes in the foot, knee and hip too.

Every injured ankle needs to be assessed and treated as there can be many variables when it comes to injures. Below are three basic exercises that can be done on a pain free ankle to mobilise and strengthen the ankle.
