Picky stars as Laois lads lead the way in Fitzgibbon Cup

Stephen Maher was the main man for DJ Carey's Carlow IT side

Fitzgibbon Cup Roundup

Stephen ‘Picky’ Maher hit 3-12 as DJ Carey’s Carlow IT reached the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter finals last night.

They dismantled 13 man GMIT by 6-20 to 0-11 points but despite winning by a margin of 27, this was not enough to set up a home tie in the next round.

The Clough/Ballacolla man was joined by three other Laois players on the field with Abbeyleix’s Enda Rowland and Ballinakill’s Cha Dwyer popping up with a point each while Camross’ Dwayne Palmer was solid in defence.

Carlow IT will now face UL in the last eight after they recorded a facile win over DCU St Pat’s by 4-31 to 2-14.

Borris/Kilcotton’s PJ Scully has recovered from injury and he came off the bench at half time to score 1-1 in what is a timely boost for Laois manager Eamonn Kelly ahead of their crunch clash with Kerry this weekend.

There was no such good news around MJ Lalor’s Maynooth University however, as their Fitzgibbon Cup journey ended at home to UCC.

The Ballypickas ace was desperately unlucky not to score a goal on the stroke of half time as his team bowed out on a scoreline of 0-22 to 0-14.

Elsewhere, Joe Campion’s LIT advanced to the quarter finals after beating WIT as did Colm Stapleton’s Mary Immaculate College but Donnacha Hartnett’s CIT are out after they could only manage a draw with NUIG while so too are Cian Taylor’s DIT.
