Old Portlaoise school may become a health centre

Maryborough NS

A 119-year-old Maryborough National School in Portlaoise could get a new lease of life as a health centre.

The school is opposite the Catholic church on the Stradbally Road in Portlaoise.

Trovatore Limited, whose directors are Marcus Breslin and Jayne Breslin, 86 Main Street, Portlaoise has published a planning notice outlining its intention to apply to Laois Co Council for planning permission to change the use of the former school building to a medical/health centre as well as a pharmacy with doctor surgeries and clinics, as well as two-storey extensions to the front, west and back of the building.

The work, if granted planning permission, will involve the demolition of the single-storey, side and rear extensions and a converted play shelter.

The planned pharmacy will include first floor office and staff room. The former school building will be converted to a reception.

The development will involved the construction of new consulting rooms and associated administration, staff and service facilities.

Other works will include the widening of the site for vehicular access by removing an existing wall, removal of the front boundary wall and public footpath widening.

It will also see the provision of on-site parking.
