USED CLOTHES COLLECTION IN AID OF DURROW COMMUNITY CENTRE: The committee are holding a used clothes collection which will be collected from the Community Hall at the end of April. Bags of used clothes can be left into the Hall each morning, 9.00am to 1.00pmfrom now until the end of April. No duvets, pillows or cushions to be included as they will not be accepted. This is an opportunity to do a clean-out of used clothes and by doing so, you will be supporting the Community Centre and The National Council for the blind – and this would be very much appreciated!
DAWN CHORUS 2017: The Annual Dawn Chorus will take place this year on Sunday 30th April in Dunmore Wood. Meet in the car park at 4.45am and the walk starts at 5am sharp. GIVE BLOOD: The Mobile Unit of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service will be in attendance at the Castle Arms Hotel on Thursday April 27thfrom 4.30pm until 8.00pm. As this is the first visit for the New Year we appeal to have a good attendance at this clinic. Please give one hour on the 27th to help save lives.
CULLOHILL ICA: The ICA group held their last Annual General Meeting in Cullohill Community Centre following the Pilates Class. Noreen Byrne attended and announced the details of the Federation trip to Donegal at end of June. Booking through any Guild member for deposit of €100. This trip has been a very enjoyable trip every year and very good value. The Pilates classes ran by the guild had twenty three people attending and have two more classes to go. These are free classes and all are welcome. Our teacher Julia McGuire is going to do voluntary work in Uganda from June to November. We held a fundraiser to help with her work at an all-girls school. We wish Julia a safe journey and we look forward to Pilates Classes on her return. Charities supported during the year were Cuisle Walk, Federation Charities and the Homecare team. We also supplied plants for the Community Centre window boxes. The guild had a most successful year and the next meeting will be held on Tuesday May 2nd.

FUELLING AMBITION ROADSHOW: Organised by Enterprise Ireland and Network Ireland, in conjunction with the Local Enterprise Office Laois and the Entrepreneurs Academy, the event will take place in The Portlaoise Heritage Hotel on Tuesday 25th April at 6pm. The Event is Free of Charge to existing and potential entrepreneurs and businesswomen and will showcase inspiring stories of female success. Event Facilitator for the evening is Mary O’ Rourke, Former Minister, renowned speaker and published author. Helen Gee, founder of G’s Gourmet Jams and Maryrose Simpson, founder of Ladybug, two ambitious Laois entrepreneurs will share their business journeys and ‘steps to success’ at the event.
DURROW LIBRARY: Durrow library would like to thank everyone for their donations of Lego. The Lego club will start after Easter break and will run on Wednesday after school with an additional session on Saturday should there be a lot of children interested. If anyone has any more Lego they would like to donate, please drop it in to the library at their convenience.
The Irish Comhrá Group meeting in Durrow Library had a good turn out for their first session. Some scheduling issues still have to be ironed out so the time and date of their next meeting will be advertised as soon as possible. If anyone would like to join the group please just contact Lori at the library.
Recent updates to the library system mean that some changes have happened. Details of these can be found online or in the library. Joining the library is still free but your library card will now work in any library in the Republic of Ireland and books/dvds/CDs/magazines can be ordered at and delivered to Durrow library from any of these libraries also.
DURROW-CULLOHILL PARISH ANGLERS: Durrow-Cullohill Parish Anglers held another Trout fishing competition on Sunday April 9th last for the Michael O’Rourke Memorial Cup. The winner with a beautiful fish was Seanie Delehunty. Second placed was Sean Geoghegan and third placed was Seamus Stapleton. The Juveniles U14 winners were – Liam Townsend, Shane Townsend, Shane Shortall and Keelan Carroll. The next Competition will be held on April 30th for the Bill Kelly Memorial Cup and again it will be a trout fishing competition. Best of luck to all!

Level 2 Kayaking Training: LKCC will be running a Kayaking Training session on the weekend of 27th and 28th May. A fun two days of weekend paddling, games and on-the-water instruction for both adults and Juniors (U18) who want to learn the basics of kayaking with qualified Canoeing Ireland instructors. This course is part of Laois Kayak and Canoe Club’s Summer Development Programme. What you will learn: To kayak safely & competently on flat water, An understanding of the Basic Paddling Techniques and Safety Rules of canoeing, An ability to Enter and Exit a kayak correctly, Forward Paddle, Reverse Paddle, and Stop, An ability to turn while stationary using Forward Sweep Stroke, Reverse Sweep Stroke and a combination of Forward and Reverse Sweep Strokes, Simple Draw Stroke, Low Brace
Turning on the Move, Edging while the kayak is moving, Capsize Drill, An ability to assist in an Assisted X Rescue and/or an H Rescue. Group sizes are limited to a maximum of 12 persons Booking details are on our Facebook page.

HARPS CAMOGIE CLUB: The U10, U8 and U6 girls are taking part in a fundraiser (‘Play for Barnardos’) in aid of Barnardos on Monday 24th April in the Juvenile pitch in Durrow. All players are being asked to bring along €2 each. Barnardos’ work is about helping children make the most of their lives, regardless of what they’re up against. They operate in over 40 Barnardos Centres in communities across Ireland and work with families to improve parenting skills and tackle issues of poverty, domestic abuse, addiction and the impact these problems have on children. U14 Camogie Feile: After a thrilling morning in Clonad GAA grounds on Easter Monday our girls made it through to the Laois Feile final on Saturday, 22nd April. The girls began the big day with a 2-02 to 0-00 victory over Camross and followed this up with a draw against reigning feile and county champions Portlaoise. Our next game was against St. Brigids and with ten minutes left and three goals down our girls made a miraculous comeback to win by one goal! Our final game against Naomh Eamon also resulted in a victory for the girls which sees them play Portlaoise in the Laois Feile Final. Well done to each and every girl who played a part in some great camogie.
