Stradbally 1-11 Arles-Killeen 1-6

ACFL Division 1A

County champions Stradbally won for the third successive league game to put clear water between themselves and the dropzone.

This win now moves them three points clear of Arles-Killeen who occupy that second relegation place and Martin Murphy’s side are now looking up above them for the first time rather than over their shoulders.

Stradbally made the perfect start and they racked up 1-1 inside the first minute and a half.

Colm Kelly raised the first white flag before his low ball was flicked up by Jody Dillon on the edge of the 14 metre line and then smashed into the corner of the net.

Donie Brennan replied with a brace for Arles-Killeen and although Tom Shiel raised a white flag for Stradbally, the visitors hit more points thanks to Brennan and Dermot Julian.

Colin Beale put two between them again but Arles-Killeen took the lead for the first time after 25 minutes. Shane Julian raced clear of the Stradbally defence before cutting in on his right foot and finding the bottom corner.

But Stradbally weren’t perturbed by that set back and they kicked the last two points of the half to take a 1-5 to 1-4 lead into the interval thanks to Shiel and Dillon.

Arles-Killeen drew level for the final time on the resumption of play via Shane Julian but Stradbally quickly went back in front thanks to frees from Kelly and Shiel.

Donie Brennan responded for Killeen with a point with 20 minutes to play but Eoin Kearn’s side would not score again.

Stradbally ended the game with points from Colm Kelly, Tom Shiel and Cormac Delaney to run out five point winners.

Stradbally will look to continue their good form at home to table toppers St. Joseph’s next week while Arles-Killeen host Graiguecullen as they bid to climb our of the drop zone.
