Tributes paid to former Mountmellick garage owner

Padraig Scully captured at work by his nephew, Kevin Byrne

The death occurred recently of a well-known and popular garage owner in Mountmellick, Padraig Scully.

The late Mr Scully passed to his eternal reward, in his 95th year.

The family business was something of an establishment in Mountmellick, with Padraig’s father Jimmy originally running two businesses in the town.

When Padraig took over the business, his abilities quickly came to the fore.

His nephew, local photographer Kevin Byrne, said he was someone who could turn his hand to anything. “If you came in with a car in parts, he could rebuild it. Even if the parts were from a different car – if you had ‘56 Chevy and 1960 chassis, he would be able to build it,” he said.

Padraig was known as a man who spoke very eloquently.

“He was a great man to argue a point. He was a classic debater,” he said.

Having lived on Lord Edward Street just down from his business premises, Padraig was very well known in Mountmellick and beyond.

The priest who celebrated the funeral mass commented on a photo of Kevin Byrne’s of three men, of whom the last surviving one was Padraig, saying ‘the three wise men’ are now in heaven. “There is some argument up above at the moment,” he said.

Subject

Kevin added that Padraig was one of his favourite photographic subjects, having taken photos of him for several decades, having worked in his garage in his youth.

Padraig died peacefully in the loving care of the staff of Oakdale Nursing Home, Portarlington in his 95th year.

Beloved husband of the late Brigid, he is deeply regretted by his family Seamus, Geraldine, Mary and Fergus, his sister Mary Brennan, grandchildren Fiach, David, Brion, Thomas, Cormac, Caelinn and Saorla, sons-in-law Gerard and Steve, daughter-in-law Liz, nieces, nephews, neighbours and many friends.
