Gardaí on the scene at crash near Clonaghadoo

Gardaí are on the scene following the incident

Gardaí are on the scene following a crash this morning.

The incident took place just off the N80 this morning near Clonaghadoo.

There are at least two vehicles involved and at least one of those has left the road.

Traffic is reported to be moving slowly this morning in the area as a result.

The incident comes just as Laois deals with one of the worst floods in years.

Laois County Council has confirmed that the N80 is now open to traffic except for Irishtown.  Local diversions continue to be in place.

With regard to Portarlington, Botley Lane and Bog Road are closed.

Stop and go is currently in place on Patrick Street and the Council will continue to monitor the situation.

Roads crews, Civil Defence crews and Fire Service crews are in attendance.

Members of the public are requested to observe road closure signs, drive appropriately and not attempt to drive through flooded areas.

Met Eireann has now issued a nationwide snow and ice warning as a “polar low” sweeps over the country over the next two days.

The yellow alert came into force this morning at 5am and will remain in place until midday on Saturday.

Snow showers are expected across the country during the alert but the heaviest snowfall is forecast for counties in Connacht and in Ulster.
