Fianna Fáil TD for Laois Sean Fleming has called on Minister for Health Simon Harris to direct the HSE to provide additional funding to assist people living with Dyspraxia.
Dyspraxia is a common disorder which impacts on the motor coordination of many children and adults in Ireland.
Dyspraxia Ireland has made the case for additional funding for an Education Officer to assist in co-ordinating efforts to help people living with Dyspraxia.
Deputy Fleming said, “People with Dyspraxia have to overcome daily challenges while performing basic tasks such as writing and typing and are often faced with difficulties with self-care.
“The disorder impacts on people’s motor co-ordination which results in poor balance, poor sense of direction and poor spatial awareness.”
Dyspraxia Ireland
Dyspraxia Ireland was formed in 1995 by the parents of children with Dyspraxia to ensures adequate resources are available to support the needs of people who suffer with the disorder.
This includes speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and education support.
Deputy Fleming said, “Dyspraxia Ireland has made a strong case for the HSE to provide additional funding for an Education Officer to support the work it carries out. I recently submitted a parliamentary question in the Dáil to Minister Harris on this issue.”
“The HSE subsequently replied to me to say that, while funding could not be allocated in 2017, the request by Dyspraxia Ireland is currently being considered.
“The HSE now needs to provide this much needed funding and this should be reflected in the 2018 HSE Service Plan,” concluded Deputy Fleming.
