Prisoner who escaped in Portlaoise remains at large

A prisoner who escaped from prison in Portlaoise remains at large, it has emerged.

The Irish Prison Service confirmed that Darren McInerney, who was serving a two year sentence for assault causing harm, absconded last week.

He escaped from custody while being escorted to Portlaoise Hospital last Saturday, January 20.

Despite a major search of the surrounding area, he remains at large.

Prison management are investigating the incident and are liaising with Gardaí to secure his return to custody.

It is understood he managed to slip out of his handcuffs while having a cigarette.


Any member of the public who sees this man or knows of his whereabouts are advised to notify gardai immediately.
