Disappointing start as Laois ladies lose league opener to Cavan

The Laois ladies football went down to Cavan in the opening round of their league campaign played in Mountmellick this afternoon.

Following relegation to the intermediate championship this year, Kevin Doogue’s side will be hoping for instant promotion in the championship – but they got their league season off to a slow start and trailed by six points after 15 minutes. And while they battled hard for the remainder of the game, they were always playing catch up and Cavan eventually pulled away to record a 10-point win.

An Aisling Sheridan point got the visitors off to a good start and then Bronagh Sheridan struck for the game’s first goal in the seventh minute when she finished well after skipping through the Laois defence.

Aisling Doonan and Aisling Sheridan both pointed from play to put Cavan six up and it could have been worse had a Cavan goal not been disallowed for square ball.

A fine Emma Lawlor point eventually got Laois off the mark in the 18th minute and although Doonan and Mona Sheridan pointed to push Cavan 1-5 to 0-1 up, Laois showed big improvement from there to the end of the half.

The introduction of Clare Conlon and Noirin Kirwan up front – as well as Mary Cotter in defence was the catalyst for Laois’s revival and two points from Conlon and one from Erone Fitzpatrick left just four in it at the break – Cavan 1-5 Laois 0-4.

Another well-struck Conlon free got Laois back within three early in the second half but that was as good as it got.

Laois would only score three more points as Cavan added on 107, the goal late on from Aisling Doonan rounding off a deserved win for the Ulster side.

Laois are back in action again next Saturday when they travel to take on Tipperary – with further games against Waterford, Clare, Sligo, Armagh and Tyrone to follow.
