Relief for Laois family as stolen tractor is recovered

The Massey Ferguson tractor that was stolen from the Doyle family farm near Mountmellick on January 12

The Laois farming family that had a tractor stolen from their yard almost three weeks ago have thanked their local community and the Gardai following its recovery.

Rory Doyle from The Rock near Mountmellick posted on Facebook on Thursday evening that the tractor and trailer had been recovered. The 2012 registered Massey Fergusen as well as a Broughan trailer was taken from the Doyle family farm on Friday night, January 12.

There had been numerous sightings of it late that night and early the next morning, including in Birdhill in Clare.

Local gardai in Laois had been investigating the case and working with their colleagues in the south of the country as well as liasing with the farm organisations.

“I just want to say a big thanks to everybody that helped us recover the tractor and trailer,” said Rory.

“We have both home safe and sound. The Mountmellick guards did so much work … by tracking the tractor through CCTV camera through each town.

“The guards get a bad name in this country but they have really done the best with the resources they have. We are very grateful.”

Rory added that it was “great to know we have the back up of friends, neighbours and everyone”. (The) guards are now following leads so will hopefully bring them to justice.”
