Laois businesses set to have input on commercial rates

Is this good news for Laois businesses who pay rates?

Laois businesses are set to have a greater say in how much they pay in rates, according to the Laois County Council.

There are currently 2,000 businesses paying rates to Laois County Council.

And the Valuation Office at Laois County Council are going to trial a new method of revaluation.

Initial notices will be sent out to rate-payers next week who can then provide feedback.

Staff from the body will hold sessions at the local authority’s offices in Portlaoise.

Speaking to Midlands 103, Head of Valuation Services, Declan Lavelle said: “What is different in Laois from the adjoining local authorities we dealt with last year is that this time around, the rate payers are providing us with a lot of information up front.

“In other words they are providing us with their own opinions on valuation.

“We are providing a series of walk-in clinics in Laois, starting on March 5, and every Monday there after until April 16.

“There is no need for the rate payer to make an appointment, they can just walk in and meet us to get whatever adive or guidance they need.”
