Laois has one of the lowest disposable incomes in the country

Laois has one of the lowest disposable incomes per person in the country, with the Midlands region recording the second lowest in 2015.

According the CSO, the figure for Laois, Offaly, Westmeath and Longford in 2015 was €17,846, €695 more than the previous year but still €2,595 below the national average.

Figures show that Laois has the second highest income in the region, ahead of neighbours Offaly and also Longford.

People in Westmeath (€18,309) had the most disposable income locally, followed by Laois (€17,935), Longford (€17,828) and Offaly (€17,242).

Dublin’s average of €23,298 is the highest in the country.

Border

However, the border region’s figure of €17,641 was the lowest in the country.

Census 2016 figures have revealed that while there are 14,489 Laois residents working in the county, a further 11,477 people commuted to work outside Laois.
