First Portarlington ‘Green Balloon’ event proves a big hit

The town of Portarlington came alive last weekend – with their inaugural ‘Green Balloon’ event, one that encouraged customers to shop local, with participating businesses flying a green balloon outside their premises to indicate they had a range of special offers.

The local traders of the town came together to promote the event which took place over Friday and Saturday.

And as well as special offers and prizes in all the participating shops, there was also a top prize of a €500 voucher which could be spent in any of those businesses.

No purchase was necessary for entry to the big draw – and the winner was Rory Connolly of Walsh Island.

Primary sponsor of the event were Portarlington Credit Union and all businesses, service providers, clubs and groups were encouraged to take part by flying balloons outside their premises to highlight all that is happening and available in the town.

Adding the special atmosphere of the occasion was the presence of Mickey and Minnie Mouse around the town.

Among the visitors to the town over the two days were Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council Padraig Fleming, local councillors Aidan Mullins and Tom Mulhall, and Deputy Fiona O’Loughlin, TD for Kildare South.
