Kilkenny 1-26 Laois 1-12
Leinster MHC Round 3
The Laois minor hurlers went down to their third defeat of this year’s Leinster MHC – but only after a brave effort against a fine Kilkenny side.
Laois had lost their two earlier group games to Wexford and Dublin in Tier 1 of this year’s competitions and were through to the quarter-finals regardless of what happed this evening – against one of the sides from the Tier 2 level.
But Enda Lyons side were looking to make an impression against the standard bearers of hurling – and they certainly did that.
With fine performnaces from Conor Cosgrove, Adam Kirwan and the very impressive Mark Hennessy they put in a very good display and were in with a chance as they game entered the last few minutes.
Kilkenny played with the breeze in the opening half and although their shootingf was a bit off, they were well able to clock up the scores. Cian Kenny and Conor Kelly hit three each while Jack Doyle also caught the eye. At half-time they led 0-12 to 0-4, Laois’s points coming from Mark Hennessy (two) and one each for Kirwan and Cosgrove.
A brilliant individual goal from Ballinakill’s Cathal O’Shaughnessy gave Laois a glimmer of hope early in the second half and Kirwan, Hennessy and Cosgrove all kpet them in touch with points.
With five minutes remaining there was only five between the sides and Laois seemed to have a bit of momentum with them.
But Kilkenny shook themselves up and hit 1-6 without reply, the goal coming from Niall Higgins.
