300 mile marathon for Motor Neurone Disease to conclude in Laois

Claire Kelly

On July 12, Park Ratheniska will welcome Claire Kelly across the finish line after running 12 marathons in 12 days.

Claire is taking on this challenge to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease both in Ireland and Scotland.

She is a marathon runner and fundraiser born and raised in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland.

But Claire has strong Ratheniska roots as her mam Mary is originally from there.

Claire has outlined the feat on Facebook: “Starting on the first of July 2018 I plan to run from Aberdeen to Co. Laois Ireland, once again raising money for Motor Neurone Disease Scotland who I have supported since the diagnosis of my uncle with Motor Neurone Disease.
“The route with take me down Scotland, crossing to Belfast and then down to Laois. The total distance I will run will be 314.4 miles. Due to logistics, and the Irish sea, there are certain areas that I will not be running… but each step of the 12 marathons will be covered on foot.”
This cause is dearly connected with the Park/Ratheniska GAA Club, having lost a revered club member, and uncle of Claire, Domo Byrne, to the disease in 2015.

Beginning in Aberdeen, Claire’s final Laois leg will be the culmination of a month of marathoning to raise funds for MND Scotland and the Irish MNDA.

This is just the latest in a long line of initiatives both she and Domo’s extended family have undertaken to remember the great man.

Claire will take on 12 full marathons throughout the month. Some solo, most self-set routes, all 26.2 miles long, some even longer, which will push her harder, both physically and mentally than any challenge she has previously undertaken.

“The support that I have had while I have been doing this has been overwhelming, from friends and strangers and strangers that have become friends I have been touched on so many occasions by people that have been willing to share their own stories of how their lives have been affected by MND.

“While of course I wanted to raise as much money as I can for the charity, raising awareness  and getting conversations started has been incredible too.” Claire said.
