It looks like another great music weekend across the county.  

The Dunamaise Arts Centre has two great events running on Friday and Saturday night.  Who doesn’t love the Four Seasons for a feel good retro show? Emer Dunne’s show, ‘Saluting the Brave, is an poignant tribute to WW1’.  

Rathdowney Library is hosting a unique event that’s well worth checking out. Chis Kavanagh’s tribute to Luke Kelly is also worth putting on the list for the weekend.  Looking at all our events this weekend they offer superb value with no ticket costing more than €25 and most significantly less. This means a great night doesn’t have to cost the earth.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 18

“Where Old Ghosts Meet” – An evening of poetry, music & song

“Where Old Ghosts Meet” is a lovely event this Thursday in Rathdowney Library.  It’s a tribute to the poet Patrick Kavanagh with Jimmy Rhatigan and directed by Geoff Rose.  

There will also be music a songs with Billy Dollard, Eddie Larkin & various other local artists.  The evening is finished off with a raffle and some sausages and colcannon. A great evening for just €5.  The event begins at 8pm and runs til 10.30pm. No pre-booking, just turn up.

Derek Ryan – Live Music

This is a night not to be missed in Sheeran’s Pub Coolrain.  A great chance to see Derek Ryan in an intimate venue and is part of only 17 gigs he is doing around Ireland.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 19

These Charming Men – Live Music

These Charming Men a super cover group who celebrate the great music of Morrissey and the Smiths.  Tickets are €14 and the gig kicks off at 9.30pm. For more information or to book tickets see here.

Frankie’s Guys

Oh What A Night! This Friday join in a Celebration of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. With slick choreography, charm, charisma, brilliant audience participation, and amazing live vocals, it’s clear to see why Frankie’s Guys are receiving standing ovations up and down the country.  

This feel good show is on in the Dunamaise Arts Centre with tickets €25 and begins at 8pm. For tickets see dunmaise.ie

SATURDAY OCTOBER 20

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is at The Clear Lake.  This walk is a 8km Grade B walk and takes 3 hours so suitable for good level of fitness. Meeting point is Mountrath Cattle Mart at 1pm. €5 per walk or €20 annual membership. 

Pippa’s Fashion Factory

For all fashionistas don’t miss a great event in the Midlands Park Hotel this Saturday and Sunday.

Exhibitions on makeup, skincare, a fashion show, afternoon tea and a spectacular goodie bag promised to make it a great day. Show begins at 11am and tickets are €100. For more information see www.pippa.ie.

Emer Dunne Saluting the Brave

Another great event in the Dunamaise Arts Centre this Saturday. A captivating and entertaining show produced by Emer Dunne and featuring the outstanding musicianship of Robert Harvey, James Harvey and Eamonn Moran and written as a tribute to the millions who lost their lives in WW1.

The Valves – Live Music

The Valves are back in Portlaoise for another great gig in Kavanaghs Bar & Venue.  Entry is free and kicks off about 10pm. For more information see www.kavanaghsportlaoise.com.

The Legend of Luke Kelly Performed by Chris Kavanagh

Mountmellick Arts Centre is the host to another amazing gig this weekend.  Chris Kavanagh and his amazing band will perform amazing renditions of the songs of Luke Kelly and The Dubliners.   Gig starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are €15 and they are available from The Arts Centre and O’Horain’s Shop

Double Up – Live Music

Sheeran’s Pub is a busy spot this weekend.  More live music on Saturday with this mother & son duo. Expect an exceptional mix of dance music. This is no cover charge and the event begins at 10pm

ISPF 11th Young Bird Show

The 11th Young Bird Show will take place at the Ossory Showgrounds in Rathdowney on Saturday. This is a chance to enter your 2018 hatched birds to see if they are potential winners for the future. Lots of prizes to be won on the day and there will also be an opportunity to buy and sell birds.  Entry is €10 and includes a year’s membership. The show begins at 8am and runs til 4pm. Mr Shane Dooley – Live Music

Wrapping up a weekend of great music in Sheeran’s Pub Coolrain is Shane Dooley. Shane is a new and exciting talented local young man and well worth checking out.  No cover charge and gig begins at 10pm.

Barnashrone National School Fun Run

Take advantage of the beautiful autumn weather this Sunday and take part in the Barnashrone NS Fun Run in aid of the school. Registration is 11am at the school.  Entry is €10 with a family cost of €20. Prizes and refreshments afterwards in the school.

Donaghmore Annual Field Day

The Dunamore Annual Field Day takes place on Sunday at 11am.

It is once again in conjunction with the Laois Hunt and there will be a range of activities for children and adults. There will be a dog show and a vintage display.

Arthur McCluskey Charity Walk

Another great charity to support if you can.  The Arthur McCluskey Foundation is holding its annual charity walk in Emo Court this Sunday.  The walk begins in Emo GAA Centre at 3pm. Refreshments served afterwards in the Clubhouse.
