Portlaoise rugby back to winning ways with win over New Ross

Following their first league loss of the season last week, Portlaoise returned to winning ways this afternoon in Togher.

Trailing 8-3 at half time, they went over for three tries in the second half but will feel they left the bonus point behind them after having plenty of possession and territory after the break.

Portlaoise scrummed well in the opening half but their only score was an 18th minute penalty from Jack Reddin.

But two second-half tries from Armand Smit and one from stand-in captain Robin Foot – usual captain Paudie Bourke was out injured – as well as three conversions from Reddin swung the game in Portlaoise’s favour.

The result keeps Portlaoise in contention at the top of the table and they’re back in action next Sunday when they make the short trip to Cill Dara.

Elsewhere, the Portlaoise 2nds team beat New Ross 22-7.

PORTLAOISE: Niall Keenan; Jamie Holohan, Simon Williams, Armand Smit, Mark Ikpomwen; Jack Reddin, Darragh McAuley; Pat Breen, Harry Lalor, Brian Flannery; Will Sherlock, Diarmuid Joyce; Mark Sherlock, Ross Cooper, Robin Foot.
