Bonus as Portlaoise rugby get back on track with big win

Portlaoise 34 Mullingar 9
Rugby – Leinster League Division 2A

The Portlaoise rugby team recorded a bonus point win at home to Mullingar this afternoon as they bounced back from their first loss of the season against Cill Dara the last day out.

Twelve points from the boot of Jack Reddin and a try from the ever reliable Robin Foot helped Portlaoise to a 17-9 lead at the break.

Foot went over for another try early in the second half which Reddin converted and late tries from Niall Keenan and Mark Sherlock made sure of the big win and the crucial bonus point.

Man of the match Brian Flannery was excellent at prop in a pack where Harry Lalor, Ross Cooper and Shane Reilly all dominated.

Philip O’Brien and Reddin controlled the game from half back as the side under Paddy McEvoy, Michael Fennelly, Mark Delany and MJ Dwyer showed great form.

The win keeps Portlaoise in fourth place – but just four points behind leader Clondalkin. Newbridge (away), who are second in the table, are next up next Sunday.

PORTLAOISE: Gavin Thompson; Matthew Thompson, Andrew Ryan, Armand Smith, Niall Keenan; Jack Reddin, Philip O’Brien; Shane Reilly, Harry Lalor, Brian Flannery; Diarmuid Joyce, Will Sherlock; Mark Sherlock, Ross Cooper, Robin Foot. Replacements: Mark Ikponwen, Aron Coughlan, Daniel Checa, Jack Kavanagh, Kevin Griffin.
