Emergency services are at the scene of a multi-car pile-up on the N80 Portlaoise to Tullamore Road near Mountmellick.
Traffic is expected to be diverted for the next hour or so.
One jeep ended up overturned in a field near Derrcloney as a number of cars crashed into each other just before 9am this morning.
It’s believed the incident happened after a car stopped to turn into a house on the road coming from Portlaoise.
A number of vehicles stopped behind that care but those behind then started to crash into the back of each other with one driver veering into the field in a bid to avoid the collision.
Cars coming from Mountmellick will be diverted to Ballyfin and cars coming from Portlaoise will be diverted to Larkin’s cross.
