Plans to repair a dangerous wall that could topple and overturn headstones at Timahoe cemetrey have been prioristed for early next year.
The graveyard’s perimeter wall, which has been examined by Laois County Council, in such dangerous condition that it is causing concern for visitor’s safety.
Cllr Paschal McEvoy asked for an update on repair plans at the latest meeting of Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District.
Cllr McEvoy previously highlighted the need for safety works last April, when he was told that the perimeter wall in Timahoe graveyard would be included in the council’s ‘prioritized works schedule’ for cemeteries across Laois.
At he time, he warned: “It’s an old stone wall and it is definitely going to fall.
“If it is not looked after and it falls, it will cause thousands of euros worth of damage to headstones.”
Highlighting the issue again at the November council meeting, cllr McEvoy stressed that the wall is in a “very dangerous state” and should be repaired as soon as possible.
In a written reply, senior environment engineer Orla Barrett said works to secure the perimeter wall at Timahoe cemetery had been prioritized for 2019.
