Knockbeg College 1-14 St. Peter’s (Wexford) 0-7
Top Oil South Leinster Junior Football “A” Final
Knockbeg College have been crowned South Leinster ‘A’ U-16 champions following an emphatic victory over St Peter’s of Wexford in Ferns this afternoon.
The side, managed by Laois senior football captain Stephen Attride and Conor Ronan, built up a sizeable lead in the first half and they maintained their dominance over their hosts.
There was a high Laois presence on the Knockbeg team as 12 of the 17 that played in the game hail from clubs in the O’Moore county.
St Peter’s actually got the game’s first point and the opening quarter of the match was relatively even.
Fionn Bergin, Oisin Byrne and Colin Dunne were all on the scoreboard for Knockbeg as the sides were level at 0-3 apiece after 15 minutes.
However, a strong finish to the half would prove crucial for Knockbeg. Colin Dunne, Fionn Bergin and Oisin Byrne all pointed again before Byrne got on the end of a great move to rattle the net from close range.
That meant Knockbeg led by 1-7 to 0-3 as they headed for the dressing rooms.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the way that the first half ended as Knockbeg held firm at the back and continued to score up front.
Fionn Bergin Colin Dunne and Oisin Byrne were among the point scorers in the second period as the lads in blue and white didn’t relent.
St Peter’s went in search of goals but the full back line of Jamie Kelly, Orrie Doran and Brendan McDonald stood firm while Sean Dollard in goal would not be beaten.
Ten points seperated the sides in the end and captain Ben Crotty received the South-Leinster ‘A’ cup.
Knockbeg will now go on to contest the Leinster semi final in the coming weeks.
