FAI Junior Cup defeat for Crettyard Utd and all of this weekend’s CCFL results

An exciting new venture for the Midlands Schoolboys League

After a longer than normal winter break this season, the Combined Counties Football League got back to action this weekend.

As the League introduced their new Futsal Cup competition over the winter break, Laois were represented by Mountmellick Utd against Westmeath’s Raharney Utd.

Mountmellick blew their opponents away, winning 28-4 to take home the Futsal Cup title.

Crettyard Utd were also out in the FAI Junior Cup – however there was disappointment in their last 16 game in the FAI Junior Cup as they went down 3-1 at home to Glengad Utd from the Inishowen League in Donegal.

The visitors took the lead in the opening half and although Crettyard equalised, Glengad went 2-1 up before half time and made sure of the win thanks to a third goal in the second half.

Rosenallis AFC versus Abbeyleix Athletic was called off due to a bereavement, while Towerhill United were also not in action today.

Stradbally Town recorded a win over Gallen Utd while Clonaslee Utd went down 2-0 to Coolraine.

Stradbally Town 2 Gallen Utd 1

Stradbally Town travelled to Ferbane Sunday morning to play Gallen United who play their league football in the division above Stradbally.

Tough weather conditions from the start didn’t help either team this morning.

Stradbally started brightly but couldn’t capitalise on their early chances. Gallen found themselves 1-0 up after 15 minutes when their number 10 finished neatly to the top corner after some sloppy defending in the Stradbally defence.

Stradbally again began to press for an equaliser and created some great chances but failed to punish Gallen and went in 1-0 down at halftime.

Stradbally were quick out of the traps in the second half and really started to dominate proceedings with Justin Lawlor and Damien Murphy dominating in midfield.

That dominance paid off when Jody Dillon latched on to a great through ball from Murphy to set up Benny Lawlor for the equaliser and an overall great team goal.

Comerford in the Stradbally goals made a couple of great saves to keep the score line as it was and how vital they proved to be.

With eight minutes to go Stradbally took a deserved lead after a deft finish from Jake Byrne. The drama wasn’t finished yet as Gallen laid siege to the Stradbally goals and were rewarded with a last minute penalty.

Comerford guessed the right way and saved brilliantly low to his right to give Stradbally the win and passage through to the next round and the last 16 of the Counties Cup.

STRADBALLY UTD: Wayne Comerford, Colin Beale, Podge Fitzpatrick, Billy Murphy, Conor Brady, Justin Lawlor, Damien Murphy, Jack Langton, Benny Lawlor, Jody Dillon and James Langton.
Subs: Alan Delaney, Joe Lacey, Adam Murphy, Jake Byrne and John Clancy.

Division 1

Clonaslee 0-2 Coolraine

Clonaslee were playing with the wind in the first half but it was Coolraine who had the first three chance of the game due to bad defending from Clonaslee.

Clonaslee got going 15 minutes in and started to pass the ball around a lot better. However they were guilty of missing one or two chances at the end of the first half.

Coolraine, now with the wind, took advantage two minutes in with their striker left in space in the box to volley it home.

Clonaslee pushed for a goal but never really looked like scoring. The third goal came from a mistake from an accidential backpass  to a Coolraine player who tapped it home.

CLONASLEE UTD: Seamus Rosney; John Rigney, Jack Malone, Michael Hyland; Pj Fitz, Ger Reilly; Paddy Hyland,  Bob Downey, Mark Doherty, Sean Dunne, Diarmuid Conroy

Subs: Jack Owens for Paddy Hyland (55 minutes), Jojo Dunne for Pj Fitzpatrick (70 minutes)
