Our guide to what’s on this Valentine’s weekend

Its Valentine’s weekend and as usual it’s a busy weekend around Laois.  

Sheeran’s Pub will be a romantic hotspot on Thursday evening and The Matchmaker is playing in Dunamaise Arts Centre.

There’s wine and chocolate tastings with the Wine Buff and Cocoa Couture and Neil Delamere brings his hilarious show Controlled Substance to the Midlands Park hotel. It’s another busy weekend.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 14

The Matchmaker by JB Keane

This great play is based on the novella “Letters of a County Matchmaker” by John B. Keane, one of Ireland’s most celebrated writers. A perfect play for valentines night.  

The show is just about sold out so you need to move very fast to get tickets.

Tickets cost €20/€18 and the show begins at 8pm.

Valentines Night with Mannie

Love is in the air in Sheeran’s Pub, Coolrain.  A super night of music and food is guaranteed. Mannie will play all the hits from the Neil Diamond’s collection and a hot sit down meal also included for just €15 per person. To book call (057) 873 5837.

Little Red Riding Hood Panto

Mountmellick Macra are performing their 21st Pantomime, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and it’s not to be missed. The show is running Thurs, Fri & Sat 8.15pm and Sun at 3.00pm & 7pm in the Mountmellick Marca Hall.

Tickets cost €10 for adults and €5 for children and are on sale in O’Gorman’s shop and on the door before every show.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 15 

Pádraig Jack – Live Music

Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue hosts Pádraig Jack this Friday night. Born and raised on the largest Aran island, the music of bilingual artist Pádraig Jack is influenced by his surroundings as much as it is by James Taylor, Van Morrison, Paul Brady and The Eagles.

A great night is planned. Tickets are €8 and the gig begins at 9:30pm. For tickets see here

Gourmet Chocolate & Wine Tasting

The Wine Buff, Portlaoise together with Cocoa Couture have put together one of the best evenings available, chocolate and wine. You will get to enjoy a chocolate making demonstration followed by chocolate and wine pairings, a must for all chocolate and wine lovers.  

Tickets are €30 and the event runs from 7-9pm in The Wine Buff in Portlaoise. For more information see here

Neil Delamere – Controlled Substance

Bought to you by Kavanaghs Comedy Club. Award-winning comedian Neil Delamere is one of the top acts working in the Irish comedy scene today, well-known to audiences for his regular television appearances on RTÉ and the BBC.  

Neil is very popular in Laois and has sold out many a gig. There are a very limited number of tickets available for Friday night in the Midlands Park Hotel. Tickets are €26 and the gig begins at 8:30pm. Tickets are on sale from here.

PORTAL Teenage Disco

To kick off the mid-term PORTAL Teenage Disco will run an event on Friday night in Portarlington Community Centre.  The disco will run from 8pm-11pm and be fully supervised.

Mounted Games Association of Ireland Gala Ball

The Killeshin Hotel will host the Mounted Games Association’s Gala Ball on Friday night.  The night starts with a gathering at reception at 5pm, followed by a seated three course meal at 7.30pm.

There will presentations, prizes  and live music & DJ. Tickets cost € 55 and can be booked here

Sunset Riders – Live Music

Come along to the ultimate rock experience playing Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen & More at Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue. Tickets are €7 and the gig begins at 10pm. To book see here.

Fusion Laois Valentine’s Ball

The well run teenage disco returns for all things valentine in the Castle Arms Hotel, Durrow.  Tickets are € 15 and runs from 8:30– 11:30pm. For tickets see tickets.ie, Super Valu and Centra stores & local school reps.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 16

The Fanzines

Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue sees The Fanzines return for a great night of live music. There is no cover charge and the event begins at 9.30pm. 

Isla Grant – Yellow Rose Tour

Highly respected singer and prolific songwriter Isla Grant makes a welcome return visit to Ireland after an absence of two years with a beautifully constructed show.

The show begins at 8pm in the Dunamaise Arts Centre and tickets are €30/€28.  For more information call 057 8663355.

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is the Emo Court Walk.  This walk is a Grade C 8km walk and takes 2-3 hours so a good level of fitness is required.

Meeting point is at Emo Village entrance at 11am.  €5 per walk or €20 annual membership (€30 for family). 

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 17

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is an Early Spring Forest Walk. This walk is a Grade C 8km walk and takes 3 hours so suitable for all.

Meeting point is at Cullahill Community Centre at 11am.  €5 per walk or €20 annual membership (€30 for family). 

Wedding Showcase – Abbeyleix Manor

Abbeyleix Manor is hosting a wedding showcase this Sunday. It’s a great chance to view the wedding facilities, meet the dedicated wedding co-ordinators and enjoy canapes and refreshments on the day. Free entry from 1pm.

Emo Family Forest Day

Explore the woodland environment of Emo Woods, search for clues for woodland animal species, playing games to help us become more aware of our surroundings, and free play.

€10 per person, only one adult per family pays, grandparents and Nichiren under four go free.The event runs from 11am-2pm.
