Portlaoise 1 Wicklow 0
Leinster Hockey League Division 9
Portlaoise Ladies Hockey Club earned a well-deserved win against Wicklow First in Leinster League Division 9 last weekend.
The teams were well matched and lie on similar points in the league table.
Portlaoise went on the attack in the first half and after maintaining a period of strong pressure, Portlaoise scored a goal.
A side-line free was passed to Yvonne Hargroves, who maintained possession of the ball and gave a strong pass to Orla Dwyer in the circle.
Orla Dwyer’s initial push on target was defended by the Wicklow goalkeeper. However, Dwyer re-gained possession of the ball and moved past the goalkeeper, slipping the ball into the back of the Wicklow goal.
The Portlaoise defenders maintained a confident defensive game throughout the second half to prevent any goal opportunities for Wicklow.
Great shadowing from Jenny Keegan was followed by block tackles from Susan Fingleton and the defence kept the Wicklow team out of the Portlaoise circle for a large part of the game.
Portlaoise goalkeeper Linda Monaghan maintained great poise with some excellent saves while defending short corners.
Only three league matches remain for Portlaoise before the close of the current season.
Portlaoise lie in third position in the Leinster Ladies Division 9 League table and hope to achieve more victories before the end of the season.
They will take on Malahide Fingal 2nd next weekend in an away fixture.
The club are also holding a Fundraiser Comedy Night in Kavanagh’s Bar and Venue on Friday 15th March 2019.
Doors will open 9pm with tickets available from any team member or from Kavanagh’s Bar.
It promises to be a great night, with comedian Tom O’Mahony as the main act. Tom is one of the best comedians on the Irish circuit and has starred in the RTE series Damo & Ivor.
